Several years ago when I graduated from high school, I remember the declaration I made to myself. I was going to enter college with a completely fresh and optimistic attitude. I was going to work really hard and do whatever it took to get a 4.0 grade point average.

I knew that my purpose in life at that time was to tap into a new level of my potential so I could truly excel for the first time ever. I was excited and hopeful.

In my first semester, I put every ounce of will power I had into the process and forced myself to conform to the expectation I had of myself. I did get a 4.0– but at my core I hated every minute of it. After that semester, I just could not sustain the will power and I started to ‘check out’ of the college learning environment altogether.

I actually endured 3 long years of this until one day I knew that I could not stand it for another minute. I spontaneously dropped out and applied to Naropa University which is a very liberal, private college focusing on Buddhist studies in Boulder, Colorado.

This opened some incredible new doors in my life and gave me my first real taste of freedom in the educational setting.

Now, here is the first lesson I learned from this experience:

I spent 3 loooong years using will power and force to do something that was not in accordance with my higher calling on this planet. That is 3 years of fighting against universal law… all because I had an internal voice of expectation telling me what I ’should’ do.

Most of us end up wasting a lot of time because we listen to that voice. We stay in jobs we dislike; we whither away in marriages that no longer serve us; we hold onto houses or possessions that clutter our lives.

And the only reason we do this is because we don’t really question our assumptions. We think, ‘that’s just the way it is.’ Our minds become convinced that we do not have a choice in the situation.

Life purpose comes to us when we have the courage and the honesty to face reality as it is without excuses or justifications for why we are stuck. We always, always have a choice in each moment… and the fundamental choice we make is to open or close, to embrace or postpone reality, to identify with love or fear.

In my book the Purpose Principle, I talk a lot about getting it in a whisper. This means that we can acknowledge the red flags that show up early on when we are disconnected from our purpose.

In my experience, this is one of the most important skills we can develop in life.  In our modern world, we are deeply conditioned tolerate mediocre, substandard circumstances.  We are taught that it’s actually a responsible way to live to buy into our limiting beliefs and to settle for a life that is way below the standard of our true life’s purpose.

What I am suggesting is that you stop doing this–and you make your real purpose the absolute #1 priority on this planet.

When things aren’t going the way you want, it does not mean that the universe is punishing you or that you should use it as further evidence for the fact that you can’t be, do, or have anything you truly desire.  All that’s happening is that the universe is trying to wake you up!

In fact, the harder things get, the more life seems to be unraveling in front of you, the more opportunity you have to awaken to your life’s purpose.

Remember, the biggest danger we all face is that we tolerate mediocrity for far too long.  We convince ourselves that this is just how we are supposed to live–that we are holding up our end of the bargain.  We believe this because we see so many people around us doing the same thing.

Be one of the few (maybe 1%) who chooses to get it in a whisper.  Be one of the few who decides to awaken in this very moment. By doing this, you will tap into a higher dimension of reality that everyone is silently longing for, yet few actualize.
