You’re looking at your books and you have come short of your financial goals yet again. Your week is busy, but a lot of your time is being eaten up by tasks that aren’t making you money. With all the time and energy you put into trying to make your business grow, you quietly wonder to yourself if it’s all worth it.

There is never quite enough time or money and your life feels out of balance. You love what you do, but there is a lingering doubt or possibly even a hopelessness that you have what it takes to create the success you desire.

Now, just about any serious entrepreneur can relate to this scenario, whether in their current situation or at some point in the past. It seems to be a necessary rite of passage to handle the pain and overwhelm of learning how to build a business and make a profit. This is why 80% of small businesses will fail within the first 5 years.

You have probably heard that saying that success comes to those who hang in there just a little longer. I would partially agree with this. You can hang in there all you want, but if you don’t have the right foundation and strategy in place, your business can never grow the way it needs to survive and flourish.

What are the key components that make up this foundation?

1. An ability to work with mental resistance-
you have to train your mind to maintain a focus on what you want instead of what you don’t want. If you haven’t hit your business or life goals, then the natural and habitual reaction of the mind is to fight against present moment reality. When we do this, our energy constricts and we get frustrated, worried, or depressed about how things are developing. You have to be able to create space around this kind of resistance, or else the circumstances you fight against will just keep showing up.

2. A clear and strategic marketing plan
–So many business owners avoid this crucial step. They either do too little and just hope that new clients will come their way, or they run around with their heads cut off trying all sorts of tactics to get the exposure they need. You need to be organized and strategic in how you get your message out to the world. This means digging one or two holes deeply. Identify the strategies that you most resonate with and put your heart into them consistently over time. Don’t spread yourself thin by putting a touch of energy into a million different marketing strategies.

Honestly, if you just have these 2 pieces of the puzzle in place, you are doing better than 80% of the small business out there: you know how to work constructively with your mind and you have a clear and strategic plan in place to connect you with your target market.

What you want to find is that magic touch where your business starts to flow; it develops almost effortlessly and you don’t have to force it or put any will power into it. This is absolutely possible, but you have to have the right mindset, knowledge and commitment.

For 80% of small business owners out there, at least one of these components is missing which is why they don’t make it. The ones who thrive in business are the ones who find the ease in what they are doing. On a fundamental level, their business comes naturally and easily to them.

It is very helpful to set an intention to experience this kind of ease in your business. If you’re trying too hard, or missing out on precious time with your family, or compromising your health, it will only backfire. Your purpose in life must be evenly spread through all dimensions of your daily experience.

The irony is that you will likely have all the success and money you want when you give up your attachment to having these things altogether. You have to want the success-and then totally let it go. Set it free and let it come to you. Sure, do your part- train your mind well and have a clear and strategic marketing plan in place. But a lot of us get stuck because we think we’re in control of the whole process.

Honestly, you can’t control what happens in business and life. You can do your best, but then you just have to get out of the way and let the magic happen. Just make sure you are doing your best! The rest isn’t up to you. Find that balance between action and receptivity, between initiating and letting go. That is where the magic happens.

    There are 2 distinct aspects to any business being successful- the mindset of the entrepreneur & the business “Machine”, in that I would include the strategies, systems & processes that produce/provide a product/service- and informing potential customers that you provide a solution to the problem they have (Marketing) as well as the administrative functions- the paperwork, finances, taxes etc.

    I Retweeted the article because not only do I coach entrepreneurs but I am one & I found your post a timely reminder to me to focus. Particularly on positive outcomes- getting the mindset right is half the battle, without it nothing can be achieved!
