I want to share a quick insight with you, one that has been becoming more apparent to me the more I mentor online entrepreneurs and small business owners.

This is a lesson that I personally find quite challenging, given that so much of our modern world rewards immediate gratification. This teaching is very humbling, simple, and unglamorous–but still possibly the most important attribute we can have when it comes to growing a business.

Consistency.

Let me ask you, are you guilty of trying a couple of marketing strategies and then quickly giving up on them if you don’t see immediate results? Or perhaps you have found some really effective ways to market, but once you are busy with clients or customers, your business development time somehow disappears?

When it comes to internet marketing, you pretty much need to be a rock.. especially starting out. It takes a fair amount of energy to get a new project launched, and that energy has to be distributed effectively over time. I see so many internet entrepreneurs making themselves dizzy and exhausted running around from marketing strategy to strategy without any real method to their madness.

They just want to find what works as quickly as possible, which is understandable. The idea here is that any marketing strategy can yield results if you stick with it day in and day out.

Consider blogging as a great example. How many people do you know who have set up a blog with great enthusiasm, sharing proudly to the world that they are on the verge of creating their very own information empire? They post every single day… for about a week. Then the next week, they make 3-4 posts. By the end of the month, they maybe check in with their blog once a week.

Then, they are kind of sick of it because they are spending all this time on it and not seeing immediate results. Perhaps you can relate to this little scenario? I know that I sure can. This is partly due to the fact that you have to go into marketing a blog with the right expectation.

If you think you’ll get flooded with traffic just because you wrote 1,000 words over a few days, think again. Instead, how about making a rock solid commitment to yourself to create one piece of fresh, new content every day for 2 months, even when you don’t feel like it?

That is a sign of entrepreneurial maturity–when you can commit to something even after that initial wave of resistance creeps in.

All of marketing is like this. How many people try PPC marketing and give up after spending 10 hours learning the ropes and losing a few hundred bucks? How many people get on Twitter for a month and then call it a waste of time? The funny thing is that there are many highly successful marketers out there right now pretty much handing out their keys to the success kingdom, but very few of their followers are actually making strides.

How could this be? It is entirely due to the fact that they have the wrong mindset going into it. Their expectation is that if it’s going to work, it will work right away and should be relatively easy.

My suggestion to you is to create a 2 month action plan where you promise yourself that you will follow through on your marketing objectives, even if you don’t feel like it or some resistance or doubt is creeping in. Marketing is entirely within your control, but only if you have some basic control over your own mind.

When you are consistent, you gain momentum. You experience that wonderful quality called rhythm, flow, or balance. This is one of the keys to your business success!
