This really is one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves on a daily basis. We can define intuition as the aspect of self that is:
- always right 100% of the time
- connected to the invisible world of energy that is the basis of all there is
- not at all concerned with conventional logic or societal expectations
- only interested in freedom and evolution
- totally and completely whole in this moment
Every single one of us has this absolutely amazing presence of intuition within us. This presence is there to guide us toward increasing states of integration, wholeness, and growth. It is the part of us that is entirely geared toward expanding our creative edge so that life is NEVER static, dull, stagnant, or routine.
Perhaps the greatest tragedy of our modern era is that so many of us have been deeply conditioned to suppress this incredible resource of spiritual strength in favor of what I call the voice of obligation or the voice of ‘I should.’
This is the (illusory) part of us that is fear-based, highly concerned with what others think, very sensitive and insecure, and more interested in holding onto what is familiar rather than what is new. This is the part of us that resists change at all costs and that always looks through life from a perspective of lack.
The way I see it, a conscious entrepreneur is someone who has found that magical connection between their intuition and livelihood. For this person, life and business perpetually remain in a state of flow and growth. There is a quality of what the Chinese call ‘wu wei’ or effortless effort.
Tony Robbins calls this performing at a peak state. In the Zen tradition, it is called Big Mind, or heightened concentration based on a dissolution of the solid sense of self. You can call it whatever you want. The whole point is that you access this inner resource that is within you right NOW–and that you make this a top priority in your life and business.
How many people do you know who are strongly devoted to the voice of obligation? They stay in a job that is making them sick or miserable because ‘that is what a responsible person does’ or because ‘I have bills to pay.’
This is an incredibly painful and toxic way to live, yet the sad truth is that MOST OF US are doing just this. We are compromising our values and tolerating a quality of life that is WAY beneath our actual potential. Why?? Because we live in a society that reinforces the need to do this from all angles— media, education, even religion… we are taught that we should seek security at all costs.
The voice of obligation loves playing out the worse case scenario:
- ‘If I quit my job, I won’t have enough money to pay the bills.’
- ‘If I do what I really want, I will be poor.’
- ‘If I follow my true purpose, I will always be stressed about my finances.’
We are all vulnerable to this kind of inner dialogue. But what if we chose to follow our intuition– and out of that we created a new meaning that was much more empowering and inspiring? Perhaps one that goes:
- ‘If I quit my job, I will finally have the time and energy I need to completely immerse myself in what I love doing. ‘
- ‘If I do what I really want, I will very likely make more money than I have ever made (if I am smart about it).’
- ‘If I follow my true purpose, I will be free on all levels of being and can become a true role model for those who are starving for this in their own lives.’
The beauty of this is that we can actually choose to follow the voice of intuition right now. We can choose to create much more life-affirming beliefs. We can choose to TRUST in ourselves and the universe. Sure, we need to be mindful about the practical details. But so much of the time, we just don’t challenge our fear-based assumptions enough. We allow them to infest our lives without really examining them to see if they are ACTUALLY true.
That, my friend, is an investigation that will bear many fruits. Yes, it can turn your life upside down.. but this will only be a positive shift in the long run, if you are indeed moving closer to a life of purpose.
By the way, this is why I LOVE online marketing. This is my vehicle to freedom. If you have some fire left in your being to become an independent, free-thinking entrepreneur who does things on your terms, then I invite you to fuel those flames and immerse yourself in your true calling, whether that is through my approach (internet and network marketing) or another one that strikes your fancy. The paths to purpose are infinite. It is time to let your intuition guide you to yours.
