In previous blog posts, I have discussed how effective it is to create one new piece of content every day for your business that you spread across the internet in various ways. Once your content is created, you have multiple online outlets to post it. You see, the biggest problem for content marketers is that their information tends to be isolated to one or two main places on the internet.
If you are serious about quick business growth, you want your content to be everywhere. Along these lines, your content can start out as a blog post, which you repurpose into an article and distribute through online articles directories, then through social bookmarking sites, then through video distribution sites, then through social media sites.
This is how you start dominating the search engines for your industry, regardless of what it is. The key is having your content all over the place, with as many backlinks as possible to your blog or primary website.
Squidoo is one of the most important places that you can post your content because Google perceives Squidoo as an authority site, meaning that Google will often give high rankings to Squidoo lenses. Setting up a Squidoo lens can be done in about 10 minutes once you get the hang of it. You can create an RSS feed from your blog to your lens which is pretty cool. You can also upload youtube videos which I definitely recommend as well.
I typically use Squidoo when I have found a keyword that I really want to rank high for but is also pretty competitive. Creating a lens for that keyword and then linking it back to my original blog post optimizes the chances of Google ranking that blog post and/or Squidoo lens on its first page.
You can start creating Squidoo lenses at www.squidoo.com after you set up a free account. The process is pretty intuitive. Your first lens will likely take 30-40 minutes to set up, but once you get the hang of it, the set up process is really fast. I recommend that you set up 3-4 Squidoo lenses per week based on the keyword phrase you are targeting. Remember, once the content is created for your blog, it is very easy to copy and paste (I do recommend slightly modifying your blog post) into your Squidoo lens.
Keep in mind that your main goal is to get your lens highly ranked within Squidoo’s site and on Google. Now, neither of these may happen, which is okay because your second goal is to create a backlink from an authority site. This is the part you always have control over. You know your marketing efforts are never in vain if you are getting more backlinks.
It is generally a good idea to fill out your lens slightly more than you would a blog post by creating more content for it and then adding pictures. One thing you can do is create new text modules within a lens once you have written a new blog post that has similar content to your original blog post. For instance, if you created a squidoo lens on using twitter, you could add to that lens the next time you create a blog post on twitter. Make sense?
Squidoo is ranked as an authority site because they are very strict about spamming. The whole point is to create good content that will be useful to others. Just make sure your lens is not an obvious pitch for an affiliate product or to get people into your network marketing business. Squidoo has something they call ’squidon’t filters’ that will block your lens very quickly. Just make your lens full of useful content and this strategy will pan out.
If you are dead set on getting your lens on the first page of Google, one out of the box strategy is to create backlinks in article and video directories to your lens. If your lens was, for instance, had the URL www.squidoo.com/howtousetwitter, your backlinks would be ‘how to use twitter.’
Then from your lens, you would have a link to your blog or website.
Squidoo marketing is a powerful, free, and fast way to boost your search engine rankings. Leave me a comment below if you have any questions or if you want to share your experience using Squidoo.
